    sounds really good. so on this model how high do you have to have the preamp to get this kinda distortion? and do you have the master up much? also if wonder a typical JCM 800 lead amp can be voiced (modded) to sound more like this ? Its got less fizziness and more guts. cool viseo :)

      @masahall 7 лет назад

      See here -> ameblo.jp/masahall/entry-12049515947.html some photographs are showed there. I think, mains connector, fuse lamp, output jack were modifyed by Martin, but cascade circuit and master volume modify were done by second owner.

      @PoJoWo 7 лет назад

      masahall thank you for the link very interesting photos. I will try and find a page translation app so I read more thoroughly. It is an interesting time for Marshall amps of this period. I think they were doing modifications for artists but they were quite simple compared to what we see now. I think the model 2144 was a production version of some of these mods, but there wasn't as much gain as required and they came to the 2203 design with the larger cathode resistor on v2. Thankyou!

      thx man, great info. hey, if you don't mind, man, can you tell me what eq settings in marshall jcm 900 slx would be perfect for slash tone? fyi, I've been trying to achieve slash's tone with my Gibson slash afd through jcm 900 slx (with 5881 power tube) and 1960 cab (with celestion g12t75). the dual gain in this amp are confusing, man. my goal : slash's tone in 90s or velvet revolver tone. thx man, you're great

    • @masahall
      @masahall 8 лет назад

      Sorry to late to reply for you. I think JCM900 SL-X is very flexible amp. According to my experience, if you set Sensitivity (2nd gain) to high(15-20), the tone become dirty. But set it to low(10-15), tone beccome crean. Don't set it to 20! The tone become blur. To make Slash like tone , you should be start to set Volume(1st gain) around 5, and Sensitivity (2nd gain) around 15.(all at 12 o'clock) If you raise Volume,the tone become fuzzy and lose the treble. Raise Sensitivity, increase distortion without losing brightness. Let's try to find the combination of 2 gain controls.

      +stratznhatz OD-1 has a unique tone of the midrange . It is, will be kept moderately unpleasant treble and bass of the Marshall stack. So rather than a booster, it is a large role as a tone filter.

    The 2203 sounds edgy and raw, in a really good way. The 1959 is nice as well. I have a 1959RR and I absolutely love the character of that amp. But by the time I get a decent crunch from it it's so Frickin' loud that shit is falling of the neighbors walls three houses down the the block. So i use a couple of different dirt pedals in the front end, and even so the character of the amp still shines through. No other amp I have does what my Marshall Super Lead 100 MkII does. I must mention that I had Mercury Magnetics wind me a 2.2K primary output transformer (and a better choke), which gets a Marshall a lot closer to those early EVH tones. I left the NF on the 4 ohm tap, as that what was stock on the 1959RR. Very lively amp to play, lots of gain in the cascade channel. Something akin to your 2203. These amps respond very well to NOS preamp tubes as well, just another component to the recipe. The list goes on and on and on and.... well, you get the picture.

    • @masahall
      @masahall 8 лет назад

      +Viking Mike Thank you for the comment. My 2203('80) is modfied only master vol to post phase inverter. Valves are recent Electronic Harmonics. 1959RR is good amp, I wanted it...but sold out. So I get 2203. Because I think that's simirer to 1959RR. Bytheway,'76SUPER LEAD is milder than 2203. I think the difference is capaciter in circuit.

    From what I have read about EVH's live rig from the earlier days, Edward was using these same speakers. The newer version of these don't sound as good. This version of G12t-75, in my opinion sound really nice and more like a greenback. I bet they sound even better the more you crank up the power from a 100 watt valve amp. Great playing by the way, excellent attack on the strings to get that 'raw' edgy tone from the B Maj. chord. But I guess it isn't B Maj. anymore if you tuned down a half step like Ed. Good video/post. I'm keeping my eye on Craigslist for a quad set of these, being almost thirty years old they'd sound totally dope being broke in. Perfect for early Van Halen, Priest, Maiden etc.

    • @masahall
      @masahall 8 лет назад

      +Viking Mike Than you for this comment. I didn't know that, EVH used G12T-75! I heard that G12-65 and earlyG12T-75 have similer tone as greenback. 80sG12T-75 is no premiun price. I hope you can get it!

    • @vikingmike8139
      @vikingmike8139 8 лет назад

      +masahall I was looking at the diagrams of one of his(EVH) earlier live rigs. The cabs were listed as being loaded with g12t-75 Celestions. I can't remember what year this would have been, but it makes sense considering how loud he plays live. I just picked up his EVH brand 4x12 cabinet, in black, with the EVH branded Celestion drivers. They are essentially the Heritage Series G12M Greenbacks, 20 watts/96 db sensitivity. I use this cab with a 50 watt Marshall TSL Frankensteined amp that use to be a combo, turned into a head. With NOS preamp tubes and Mercury Magnetics transformers and the EVH cab, this rig is a stand alone. I only use a MXR Carbon Copy bright in the loop, modded crybaby to a optical compressor to the front end. Stellar sounding rig, the cab is easily 80% of the satisfaction factor.

    • @masahall
      @masahall 8 лет назад

      +Viking Mike I used Marshall 1959Super Lead(1976) amplifire in this movie. It's modified cascade connecting pretube, like as 1959RR. And I used no peadal, only stright into amp. EVH was used 2 amp in earlyer. First one was used as overdrive preamp, thats line levewl output into second amp. Sometimes he used MXR Distortion+. Later he used JOSE mod amp. That has diorde clipper circuit and master vol. I think EVH wanted distortion but louder voliume. He wanted to control voliume level. Bytheway, I think Peavey 5150 is better amp to get EVH sound. Cascade and mastervol modefied old 1959 or 2203(befor JCM800) are better too. And Marshall JCM900 is similer to JOSE mods.
